Today, April 22, 2021, Ambassador Gilchrist took part in the opening of a new cultural and historical route “The Path of Samuel Bak”, created by the Vilna Gaon Museum of Jewish History in collaboration with creative agency EZCO and artist Romualdas Inčirauskas.🇺🇸| Mr. Mayor, ladies and gentlemen,
I am so pleased to join you in celebration of the artistic visionary, American Litvak, and honorary citizen of Vilnius — Samuel Bak. The story of his life and the authenticity of his art are inspiring lessons for us today and for generations to come. During the Holocaust, Samuel and his family, like thousands of others, faced unimaginable hardships on these very city streets. He witnessed the uprooting of the Jerusalem of the North. He witnessed the erasure of many paths that could have been taken by so many.
Bak’s suffering was great — but so too was his experience of compassion. He witnessed the kindness of his rescuers and experienced the transformative and healing power of creativity and imagination. As U.S. Ambassador to Lithuania, I am indebted to Samuel Bak, now a U.S. citizen, for his commitment to using artistic expression to guide us on a journey of tolerance and respect for the diverse voices of our world.
Three months ago, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, President Biden reminded us that “the Holocaust was no accident of history.” It happened because governments implemented hate-fueled laws and practices that vilified and dehumanized entire groups of people — and too many individuals stood by silently. Silence is complicity.
When we see our fellow human beings dehumanized, threatened, denied basic human rights — because of who they are — silence is complicity. Holocaust survivor and former Member of Congress, the late Tom Lantos, famously said, “The veneer of civilization is paper thin. We are its guardians, and we can never rest.” We must be vigilant. We must be bold. We must speak up against intolerance.
Thank you to all who have contributed to this project. The creative vision of the artists and the efforts of the Vilna Gaon Jewish Museum, the Samuel Bak Museum, and the creative agency EZCO will open a door into Bak’s personal story.
Mr. Mayor, thank you for the city’s support. Kamilė, Ieva, and your teams, I deeply appreciate your commitment to respecting the dignity of the victims of the Holocaust and presenting objective historical accounts of the Shoah in Lithuania. To remember the past is to protect our collective future.
🇱🇹| Gerbiamas mere, ponios ir ponai,
Man labai malonu šiandien kartu su jumis pagerbti meno vizionierių, litvaką ir Vilniaus garbės pilietį – Samuelį Baką. Jo gyvenimo istorija ir kūrybos autentiškumas įkvepia ne vien mus šiandieną, bet įkvėps ir būsimas kartas. Samueliui ir jo šeimai, kaip ir tūkstančiams kitų, teko patirti neapsakomus vargus Holokausto metu būtent šiose gatvėse. Jis savo akimis matė, kaip buvo išplėšta Šiaurės Jeruzalė. Jis matė, kaip buvo naikinami keliai, kuriais daugelis dar galėjo eiti.
Samuelis Bakas daug kentėjo, tačiau daug gavo ir atjautos. Jis patyrė savo gelbėtojų gerumą bei transformuojančią ir gydančią kūrybos ir vaizduotės galią. Kaip JAV ambasadorius Lietuvoje, esu skolingas Samueliui Bakui, dabar jau JAV piliečiui, už jo pasišventimą per meną palydėti mus į kelionę, kurioje išmoktume priimti ir gerbti pasaulio įvairovę.
Prieš tris mėnesius, minint Tarptautinę Holokausto aukų minėjimo dieną, JAV Prezidentas Joe Biden’as priminė mums, jog „Holokaustas nebuvo istorinis atsitiktinumas“. Holokaustas įvyko, nes valstybės vadovavosi neapykanta grįstais įsakymais ir papročiais, kurie šmeižė ir nužmogino ištisas žmonių grupes, kai
tuo tarpu kiti tiesiog stovėjo ir nieko nedarė. Tyla reiškia pritarimą.
Jei matome, kaip kiti žmonės yra nužmoginami, jiems grasinama, iš jų atimamos pamatinės žmogaus teisės dėl to, kas jie yra, bet tylime – tai reiškia, kad mes tam pritariame. Holokaustą išgyvenęs buvęs Kongreso narys, amžiną atilsį Tom’as Lantos’as, ištarė žymiąją frazę: „Išorinis civilizacijos lukštas yra plonas lyg popierius. Mes esame jo sergėtojai, tad negalime sėdėti rankų sudėję“. Privalome būti budrūs. Privalome būti drąsūs. Privalome garsiai pasipriešinti netolerancijai.
