Demonstration Alert – U.S. Embassy Vilnius, Lithuania

Multiple Locations:  Vilnius – Independence Square (Seimas) to Nemtsov Square in Žvėrynas; Other Cities in Lithuania, including Kaunas, Klaipeda, and Siauliai

Event: The Freedom Lights event will take place on February 24, at 6:00 p.m. in locations around Lithuania.  In Vilnius it will begin with a solidarity march from Independence Square at the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, proceeding along the Mickevičius and Birutė streets and finishing at the Boris Nemtsov Square and Latviu street in Žvėrynas. Similar marches will take place in other cities.  The events are organized by community groups to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine. Participants are expected to waive Lithuanian and Ukrainian flags and light candles and torches. The demonstration has been authorized by the municipality and is expected to be peaceful.  The Vilnius police are aware and taking precautions.
