Commercial air travel out of Lithuania
There are no indications whether commercial air travel out of Lithuania will return next week as reported previously. As of today, there are still commercial options available. We understand that these options are not optimal. We are waiting to see if restrictions will be relaxed after the Easter weekend and will include air travel. Regardless, there are no direct flights to the United States and any travel back will include a stop in Europe.
Transit travel through France and Germany (land crossing) required a transit document. For France, it is a self-filled application that every traveler must carry on hand for inspection. For Germany, it is data that is both filled out, hand carried and sent by email prior to travel. More information can be provided upon request.
Commercial return options
Here are two possible options before April 12 to travel commercially back to the United States using these routes:
1) From Lithuania to Tallinn, Estonia by road (up to eight hours from Vilnius). Border crossing is permitted through Latvia and Estonia with valid passport and proof of booked flight out of Tallinn. You will need to coordinate road travel in all three countries. It is possible to rent a car and leave it at Tallinn airport depending on the rental company. From Tallinn to Frankfurt by air (see below for April 9 and 11), Flight from Frankfurt to Newark is running daily at 1120 nonstop on United. There are flights out of Newark to other destinations within the United States. All travel can be reserved online.
2) From Klaipeda to Kiel, Germany by ferry and transit overland by train to Frankfurt in order to fly out to the United States. The route would be Ferry departs Klaipeda at 2200 daily, arrives in Kiel at 1700 next day (20 hours). There is a train from Kiel to Frankfurt airport (5 ½ hours) at 1727 and 2127. Flight from Frankfurt to Newark is running daily at 1120 nonstop on United. There are flights out of Newark to other destinations within the United States. All travel can be reserved online.
